Our Volunteer Teachers
Passionate educators who generously share their knowledge and time...

Natasha Peiris
A banker and volunteer teacher at Greater Action’s English Academy, has spent the past two years helping Afghan refugee women build confidence through conversational English.
Inspired by a desire to serve, she finds the greatest joy in seeing her students overcome their fear of making mistakes and use English in their daily lives.
While language barriers can sometimes make it difficult to explain unfamiliar words, she overcomes this challenge with patience and tools such as translation support.
Beyond teaching, she values the connections she has built with her students and the insight she has gained into their experiences and aspirations.
For Natasha, volunteering has been both enlightening and meaningful, proving that even a few hours of support each week can make a lasting difference.
Mary Ng
Mary Ng, a writer and coach, volunteers with Greater Action’s English Academy to support refugees through conversational English.
She finds the experience deeply meaningful, not only because she witnesses her students’ growth and determination, but also because it gives her insight into their lives, families, and dreams.
Despite language barriers, she adapts her teaching with patience, creativity, and support from students themselves.
Mary describes the academy as a friendly and engaging community that helps refugees build confidence and integrate into their new lives.
Reflecting on her journey, she says:
“I’m immersed in a different world.”

Help Us Upcycling
We collect pre-loved clothes and textiles to create livelihoods.

By donating your gently used items—from individuals, schools, and companies—you help transform discarded materials into beautiful, unique, and sustainable products, from bags and accessories to children’s toys and thoughtful gift items.

This work provides meaningful livelihood opportunities, empowering Afghan refugee women to earn an income and live with dignity. At the same time, we reduce textile waste and keep it out of landfills—together, we’ve already saved over six tons.
